Prostate Symptom Score: “Severe”

Your IPSS (International Prostate Symptom Score) places you in the category of severe symptoms.

It is important to realise that this does not take into consideration how bothersome your symptoms are, and how your quality of life is being affected.

Your score can be helpful as a baseline to determine progress over time and the success of medical interventions.  It can also be predictive of how your symptoms are likely to progress.  From large population studies, we know that men with moderate to severe symptoms are more likely to have their symptoms worsen over time.  They are also at higher risk of going into painful urinary retention (being unable to pass urine at all), and at higher risk of requiring surgery for their enlarged prostate.

This symptom score is a general guide only, and should be interpreted with the help of your general practitioner or urologist.
